Impetigo โ Pharmacy First Service
Impetigo is a highly contagious bacterial skin infection that mainly affects infants and children, although adults can also be affected. It commonly appears around the nose and mouth but can occur anywhere on the body.
๐ฅ Under the NHS Pharmacy First service, eligible patients can receive expert assessment and treatment directly from a pharmacist, without needing to see a GP.
Who Can Use This Service?
You may be eligible for treatment at Neils Pharmacy if:
- โ The patient is aged 1 year or over
- โ The infection is localised and mild to moderate
- โ There are no signs of systemic illness
- โ The impetigo is not recurrent or widespread
Our pharmacist will carry out a private consultation to confirm whether this service is appropriate.
Common Symptoms of Impetigo
Symptoms of impetigo may include:
- ๐ด Red sores or blisters that burst easily
- ๐ฏ Golden or honey-coloured crusts on the skin
- ๐ Itching or soreness
- ๐ Lesions commonly around the nose, mouth, hands, or limbs
Impetigo spreads easily through close contact, scratching, or shared towels and bedding.
How We Can Help
If the patient is eligible, our pharmacist may:
- ๐ฉบ Carry out a clinical assessment
- ๐ Supply topical or oral antibiotics where clinically appropriate
- ๐งผ Provide advice on skin care and hygiene
- ๐ซ Give guidance on reducing spread to others
- ๐ค Refer to a GP if the infection is not suitable for pharmacy treatment
All consultations are confidential and take place in a private consultation room.
When You Should NOT Use This Service
You should seek medical advice or contact your GP if:
- โ The infection is widespread or severe
- โ The patient has a fever or feels generally unwell
- โ The impetigo keeps coming back
- โ There are signs of deeper skin infection
- โ The patient is immunocompromised
If required, our pharmacist will ensure the patient is safely referred to the appropriate healthcare service.
