What is Wegovy® (Semaglutide) and how is it different from Ozempic®?

Semaglutide belongs to a group of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists. These medicines help regulate appetite and food intake.

  • Wegovy® is the semaglutide product licensed for weight management.
  • Ozempic® is the semaglutide product licensed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

At Neils Pharmacy, Wegovy is considered for weight management only as part of our private clinic. If you have type 2 diabetes, semaglutide treatment is usually initiated and managed by your GP or diabetes specialist, using the most appropriate licensed product.

How Does Wegovy® Work?

Wegovy mimics the action of the naturally occurring GLP-1 hormone released in the gut after eating. It may support weight loss by:

🍽️ Reducing appetite (helping you feel less hungry)

✅ Increasing feelings of fullness (supporting smaller portions)

⏳ Slowing gastric emptying (food stays in the stomach for longer)

🩸 Supporting blood sugar regulation after meals

These combined effects can make it easier to follow a calorie-controlled diet and maintain healthier eating habits when used as part of a structured programme.

Who Is Wegovy® Suitable For?

Wegovy may be considered for adults who:

⚖️ Have a BMI of 30 or above (obesity), or

🫀 Have a BMI of 27 or above (overweight) with at least one weight-related health condition (e.g. high blood pressure, high cholesterol)

🩺 All patients must undergo a consultation with a Pharmacist Independent Prescriber. A prescription is issued only where treatment is clinically appropriate and safe.

Our team will discuss available options with you and help determine whether Wegovy is suitable for your circumstances.

When Wegovy® May Not Be Suitable

Wegovy may not be appropriate if you:

🤰 Are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding

🧬 Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer

🧾 Have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2)

Your medical history, current medicines and risk factors will be reviewed carefully during your consultation.

Dosage and How Wegovy® Is Taken

Wegovy is administered as a once-weekly subcutaneous (under the skin) injection. You will be shown how to self-inject safely.
