What is Wegovy (Semaglutide)/Ozempic

Semaglutide is a medication that belongs to a class of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists. It works by helping to regulate appetite, food intake, and metabolism.

Wegovy® is the version of semaglutide licensed for weight management

Ozempic® is the version of semaglutide licensed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes

At Neils Pharmacy, Wegovy is used for weight management only as part of our private clinic.
If you have type 2 diabetes, semaglutide (Ozempic) should usually be initiated and managed by your GP or diabetes specialist.

How Does Wegovy Work?

Wegovy mimics the action of the naturally occurring GLP-1 hormone, which is released in the gut after eating. It supports weight loss by:

• Reducing appetite, helping you feel less hungry
• Increasing feelings of fullness, so you eat smaller portions
• Slowing gastric emptying, meaning food stays in the stomach for longer
• Supporting blood sugar regulation by enhancing insulin release after meals

These combined effects can make it easier to follow a calorie-controlled diet and maintain healthier eating habits.

Who Is Wegovy Suitable For?

Wegovy may be considered for adults who:

• Have a BMI of 30 or above (obesity), or
• Have a BMI of 27 or above (overweight) with at least one weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or type 2 diabetes

All patients must undergo a consultation with a Pharmacist Independent Prescriber.
A prescription is issued only where treatment is clinically appropriate.

Our pharmacists will be happy to discuss all available options with you and help determine whether Wegovy is suitable for your circumstances.

When Wegovy May Not Be Suitable

Wegovy may not be appropriate if you:

• Are pregnant or breastfeeding
• Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer
• Have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2)
• Have severe gastrointestinal disease
• Have a known allergy to semaglutide

Your medical history and current medications will be reviewed carefully during your consultation.

Dosage and How Wegovy Is Taken

Wegovy is administered as a once-weekly subcutaneous injection. You will be shown how to self-inject safely.

Typical dosing schedule (subject to clinical suitability):

• Starting dose: 0.25mg once weekly
• Gradual dose increases to 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg and up to 2.4mg once weekly, if appropriate and well tolerated

Not all patients will require dose increases. Your prescriber will determine the most suitable dose based on response and tolerability.

Always follow the instructions provided by your prescriber.

Common side effects include:

• Vomiting
• Diarrhoea
• Constipation
• Abdominal discomfort

Rare but serious side effects can include pancreatitis, kidney problems, or allergic reactions. You will be advised on what symptoms to watch for and when to seek medical advice.

Lifestyle Changes for Best Results

Sustainable weight loss depends on maintaining healthy lifestyle habits alongside medication.

Considering Other Weight Loss Injections?

Wegovy (semaglutide) is one of several injectable weight-loss treatments available through our private, pharmacist-led service. Another option some patients may be suitable for is Mounjaro® (tirzepatide), which works slightly differently and may be more appropriate for certain individuals.
