A sore throat is a common condition, often caused by viral or bacterial infections. It can cause pain when swallowing, redness, swelling, and fever.

😷 Most sore throats improve without antibiotics, but some bacterial infections may benefit from treatment.

πŸ₯ Under the NHS Pharmacy First service, eligible patients can receive expert assessment and treatment directly from our pharmacist, without needing to see a GP.


Who Can Use This Service?

You may be eligible for treatment at Neils Pharmacy if:

  • βœ… You are aged 5 years or over
  • βœ… Your sore throat symptoms started within the last 7 days
  • βœ… You do not have severe breathing or swallowing difficulties
  • βœ… You are not severely unwell

Our pharmacist will carry out a private consultation to determine whether this service is suitable for you.


Common Symptoms of a Sore Throat

Symptoms may include:

  • πŸ˜– Pain or discomfort when swallowing
  • πŸ”΄ Red or swollen throat or tonsils
  • 🌑️ Fever or flu-like symptoms
  • 🦠 Swollen glands in the neck
  • βšͺ White patches or pus on the tonsils

Not all sore throats are caused by bacteria β€” many are viral and do not require antibiotics.

If you are eligible, our pharmacist may:

  • 🩺 Carry out a clinical assessment

  • πŸ’Š Supply antibiotics only if clinically indicated
  • πŸ’§ Provide advice on pain relief, hydration, and self-care
  • πŸ“€ Refer you to your GP or urgent care if needed

All consultations are carried out confidentially in a private consultation room.


When You Should NOT Use This Service

You should seek urgent medical advice or contact your GP if:

  • ❌ You have difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • ❌ You are drooling or unable to open your mouth properly
  • ❌ You have a very high fever or feel seriously unwell
  • ❌ Symptoms last longer than 7 days or keep returning
  • ❌ A child becomes drowsy, floppy, or difficult to wake

If required, our pharmacist will ensure you are safely referred to the appropriate healthcare service.
