Sore Throat (Pharyngitis) β Pharmacy First Service
A sore throat is a common condition caused by viral or bacterial infections. Symptoms can include pain when swallowing, redness, swelling, and sometimes fever.
π· Most sore throats improve without antibiotics, but some bacterial infections may benefit from treatment.
π₯ Under the NHS Pharmacy First service, eligible patients can receive assessment and treatment directly from a pharmacist, without needing to see a GP.
Who Can Use This Service?
You may be eligible for treatment at Neils Pharmacy if:
β You are aged 5 years or over
β Symptoms started within the last 7 days
β You do not have severe breathing or swallowing difficulties
β You are not severely unwell

Common Symptoms of a Sore Throat
Symptoms may include:
π Pain or discomfort when swallowing
π΄ Red or swollen throat or tonsils
π‘οΈ Fever or flu-like symptoms
π¦ Swollen glands in the neck
βͺ White patches or pus on the tonsils
Not all sore throats are caused by bacteria β many are viral and do not require antibiotics.
How We Can Help
If you are eligible, our pharmacist may:
π©Ί Carry out a clinical assessment
π§ͺ Perform a throat swab test where appropriate
π Supply antibiotics only if clinically indicated
π§ Provide advice on hydration, pain relief, and self-care
π€ Refer you to your GP or urgent care if needed
π All consultations are carried out confidentially in a private consultation room.
When to Seek Urgent Medical Advice
You should seek urgent medical advice or contact your GP if:
β You have difficulty breathing or swallowing
β You are drooling or unable to open your mouth properly
β You have a very high fever or feel seriously unwell
β Symptoms last longer than 7 days or keep returning
β A child becomes drowsy, floppy, or difficult to wake
If required, our pharmacist will ensure you are safely referred to the appropriate healthcare service.

The Pharmacy First service builds on the NHS Community Pharmacist Consultation Service which has run since October 2019. The consultation service enables patients to be referred into community pharmacy for a minor illness or an urgent repeat medicine supply.
