Vitamin B12 Wellness Clinic
Boost you energy, improve your health
Vitamin B12 wellness for everyone, especially those on a plant based diet

Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin that plays an important role in the synthesis and function of red blood cells and the nervous system. Our bodies do not make vitamin B12, we consume it in our diet. Vitamin B12 is an essential compound that we get from animal based food sources. Those who follow a vegan or a plant-based diet are more likely to be deficient in vitamin B12.

Vitamin B12 is essential to maintain the normal functioning of the brain, nervous system and the processes involved in producing red blood cells.

Found naturally in meat, poultry, eggs and milk, Vitamin B12 is also a key component of many oral vitamin supplements, aimed at increasing energy levels. As the vitamin is water-soluble it quickly leaves the body in our urine via our kidneys, meaning that we need regular amounts. It's not harmful in high doses and plays a vital role alongside other vitamins and minerals in optimising the various processes within the body.

A regular, reliable and assured source of vitamin B12 is essential for those following a plant based diet.

Symptoms of Vitamin B12 deficiency

Sub-optimal levels of B12 can lead the body to express symptoms of tiredness, fatigue, malaise, poor memory and reduced mental function, also referred to as 'mental fog'.

Vitamin b12 insufficiency or deficiency can cause a range of symptoms. The main symptoms include:

  • Extreme tiredness
  • Lack of energy
  • Red or sore tongue or mouth
  • Pale skin
  • Changes in mood
  • Changes in movement and balance
  • Feeling pins and needles in arms and feet
Can I check my vitamin B12 levels?

Your vitamin B12 levels can be checked by a blood test. We do not currently offer this blood test service at the pharmacy, but you can contact your GP and ask for one if you wish.

Vitamin B12 deficiency is usually caused due to a lack of vitamin B12 in the diet or because the body isn't able to absorb it properly. This can be due to a medical condition, certain surgical procedures or some medications.

How do we administer vitamin B12?

If it is determined that you will benefit from vitamin B12, then our preferred method of administration is by itramuscular injection. Although vitamin B12 can be found in foods or in tablet form, the digestive system  doesn't always absorb it very well meaning it passes through the body.

By delivering the vitamin B12 directly into the muscle we avoid the digestive system meaning that much more of the medicine is absorbed by the body in a beneficial form.

Please note if you are already receiving vitamin B12 injections from your GP then this can impact our abililty to offer one to you. Vitamin B12 injections will not be given by us within 28 days of another administration. Please advise us at your consultation if you have already had vitamin B12 supplementation and the last time it was received.

Cost

Our vitamin B12 consultation costs £25 and includes the cost of the supplementation if it is deemed appropriate.
